How to Reduce YouTube Distractions, Hide YouTube Shorts permanently

Last Updated on October 20, 2024

I hate distractions and always felt frustrated.

YouTube has always been my biggest online distraction. I’ve never been into Instagram, Snapchat, or TikTok. But YouTube? I could spend hours there, going down rabbit holes. It usually started from the home feed, recommended videos, or the comment section. I’d plan to watch one video, but an hour later, I’d still be watching.

Then I found a Simple Tool on Chrome: Unhook. It’s a browser extension that helps you control your YouTube experience. I decided to give it a try. After installing it, I pinned it, and then adjusted a few settings. It was easy to set up, and I noticed the difference right away.

The first thing I did was hide the home feed. Now, when I open YouTube, I don’t see all those tempting thumbnails. I go straight to my Subscriptions feed or Watch Later playlist. This simple change helps me stay focused.

I also hid the video sidebar and comments. Before, I’d often get sidetracked by the suggestions or start reading through comments. With these hidden, I keep my attention on the video I chose to watch.

Another feature I use is hiding Shorts. Those quick clips are hard to resist. But with Shorts hidden, I’m not tempted to watch them. This makes my time on YouTube more deliberate.

Disabling autoplay was another good move. I used to let videos keep playing automatically, thinking I’d stop after just one more. But that rarely happened. Now, I decide when to stop watching, which keeps my sessions shorter.

Hiding the end screen cards and feeds also helps. Without those prompts, I’m not urged to click on another video once mine ends. This keeps me from falling into a cycle of endless watching.

After using Unhook for a few weeks, I’ve noticed I spend less time on YouTube. I’m more in control of what I watch. I no longer feel like I’m wasting time on videos I didn’t plan to watch. My YouTube experience is now more intentional and focused.

If you find yourself spending too much time on YouTube, Unhook might help. It’s a simple tool that gives you control over your viewing habits. It’s not flashy, but it works.

Good luck guys, let’s be concentrate.
